We often hear about the power of the pause when it comes to public speaking. But have you ever thought about how powerful a pause can be even before starting to talk?
Most people start speaking immediately when they give talks, as soon as they get on stage.
However, in the first few seconds the audience is not ready yet. There are always people looking at their mobile phones, checking their emails or their Facebook profiles. In the first few seconds people are often not focused on you.
Therefore, one of the best ways to catch their attention right away is to pause before you even start talking. Wait a few seconds, pick a couple of people in the room, look them in the eyes, smile and then start talking.
At the beginning it may seem a bit weird if you're not used to it, but I can assure you that this is one of the best ways not only to catch people’s attention but also to establish a real connection with your audience.
